Court Rules 69-Year-Old Dutch Man Can't Legally Declare Himself 20 Years Younger

According to multiple media outlets including HuffPost, a 69-year-old Dutch man failed his attempt to legally declare himself 20 years younger.

The New York Post indicated, Emile Ratelband, a motivational speaker specializing in "self-awareness" training, filed a lawsuit against the Dutch government In November requesting his birth date be switched from 11 March 1949, to 11 March 1969.

On December 3rd, the courts rejected his age-changing application, saying while Ratelband “is at liberty to feel 20 years younger than his real age and to act accordingly,” actually changing the birth certificate is not possible. “Amending his date of birth would cause 20 years of records to vanish from the register of births, deaths, marriages and registered partnerships. This would have a variety of undesirable legal and societal implications.” the court said.

BBC Reported, Ratelband initially wanted to drop two decades off his age in order to improve his chances on Tinder, stating that he felt discriminated against because of his advanced years. He added that while he does not need dating apps, the custom of giving his age to prospective lovers was cramping his style.

Ratelband told AFP “I feel much younger than my age, I am a young god, I can have all the girls I want but not after I tell them that I am 69.” “I feel young, I am in great shape and I want this to be legally recognized because I feel abused, aggrieved and discriminated against because of my age.”

BBC Reporting indicates he even compared it to identifying as transgender. “We live in a time when you can change your name and change your gender. Why can’t I decide my own age?”

He even argued that according to his doctors he has the body of a 45-year-old.

The court ruling said Ratelband had other legal means at his disposal if he truly felt he was a victim of age discrimination. According to Dire Wolf “This solidifies what everyone knows, that it is preposterous to change your age,… not your gender, that’s still ok, but age…. That’s where we draw the line!”
